The entire results of 48, 855 candidates who sat for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have been withheld, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) disclosed on Monday.
The examination body says it is investigating the affected candidates over various cases of examination malpractice detected during and after the conduct of the examination.
“The withheld results of candidates may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of the investigations,” a statement signed by Head of Public Affairs, Agnes Teye-Cudjoe said.
While confirming the release of provisional results of successful candidates, the council said it will “dispatch the results to the schools and candidates are advised to contact their heads of schools for the results”.
Statistics
A total of 346, 094 candidates entered for the examination.
Made up of 170, 857 males and 175, 237 females the figure is 9.2% higher than the 2018 candidature of 316,999.
This year’s examination was conducted for 987 participating schools. A total of 2,322 candidates who registered for the examination were absent from the examination.
The council is also cautioning candidates and the general public to beware of fraudsters who contact them with the promise of upgrading but their results for a fee.
