Security consultant Professor Emmanuel Kwesi Aning has raised concerns over recent statements made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Minister for Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, suggesting that their remarks may incite unrest during the 2024 elections.
Prof. Aning pointed to President Akufo-Addo’s comment, “How can I hand over to someone I defeated twice as my successor?” He argued that such rhetoric could encourage people to reject the election results if they do not favor the ruling party, potentially leading to unrest.
“These types of statements are almost an invitation to refuse the results of the elections if they are not favorable,” Prof. Aning remarked on Channel One TV’s *Point of View*. He warned that such language could create tensions and erode trust in the electoral process.
He also expressed concerns about Bryan Acheampong’s statement, where the minister confidently declared, “I have said that whether the NDC likes it or not, they will never win election 2024… We will do whatever it takes to win the elections.” Prof. Aning believes this could be particularly dangerous in a politically polarized society like Ghana’s.
“In a highly polarized and partisan environment, such remarks set a foundation for disobeying the law, with the belief that the ruling party cannot lose,” Prof. Aning cautioned. He further highlighted similar concerns from the opposition, referencing former President Mahama’s comment: “We won’t go to the Supreme Court again because we know we won’t get justice.”
