The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has confirmed the destruction of excess and defective electoral materials for the Ahafo and Volta Regions in preparation for the 2024 general elections.
In a press release on November 15, the EC announced the recall of ballot papers for these regions due to serialisation errors. The defective materials were destroyed on Saturday, November 16, as part of efforts to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
According to a statement signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations at the Electoral Commission, the destruction was carried out through burning and witnessed by key stakeholders.
“The destruction done through burning was witnessed by the Agents of the Political Parties, the National Intelligence Bureau, National Security, Ghana Police Service, and the Electoral Commission,” the statement read.
The commission also pledged transparency in addressing similar discrepancies.
“The commission will today, Sunday, November 17, 2024, account for all the ballot papers printed for both Regions, which will be burnt subsequently due to challenges with the serial numbers. The Commission will inform the Political Parties and other Stakeholders in due course to enable them to observe the destruction of these ballot papers,” the statement added.
The EC emphasized its commitment to ensuring a credible electoral process and assured the public that measures are in place to prevent such errors in the future.
