Former Ghanaian football captain Asamoah Gyan has raised concerns about the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s campaign promise to establish a 24-hour economy, suggesting that the concept is not entirely new.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Gyan highlighted that certain essential services in Ghana already operate on a 24-hour basis.
“It already exists. Police stations, hospitals, and filling stations already operate on a 24-hour basis. So, if the government says ‘24-hour economy,’ they should say that they will improve it. It’s not a new policy,” Gyan remarked.
The discussion follows the NDC’s proposal during the 2024 general elections, led by former President John Mahama. The initiative aimed to promote economic activities around the clock, creating opportunities for businesses and jobs, particularly in the informal sector.
Critics, including Gyan, believe the policy overlaps with existing systems in essential services. However, supporters argue that the NDC’s plan seeks to expand the concept into other sectors, such as retail, transportation, and entertainment, ensuring they function seamlessly around the clock.
After winning the 2024 elections, John Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the 24-hour economy policy when he assumes office on January 7, 2025.
