A heavy rain and windstorm caused a dilapidated pavilion to collapse, killing at least three people and leaving scores with severe injury.
The incident which occurred on Monday (30 October 2023) has thrown the twin communities of Asuafo and Fawoman – all in the Tain District of the Bono Region – into a state of shock.
Assemblyman for the Badu Electoral Area Joseph Okyere said the incident was reported during a community fun game at this year’s Bomtuo festival at Badu Fawoman. He said all traditional activities have been halted following the development.
“I can confirm to you that the three victims are dead”, Okyere said. “They are male victims whose ages range between 12 and 30 years. They were all spectators and had joined the charged crowd to witness the festival which started yesterday”.
“During the event heavy rains accompanied with winds struck the community causing the pavilion to collapse. The crowd sensing danger ran for safety, but the pavilion moved towards them and finally collapsed, killing the three people on the spot, he further narrated.
The injured were swiftly taken to nearby healthcare facilities while the deceased were moved to the Tain Government Hospital.
Monday’s rains battered parts of the Bono Region damaging roads and destroying landed properties. Emergency services were yet to provide an official update on this development.
