A fatal accident on the Akumadan-Konkoma road in the Offinso North District in the Ashanti Region resulted in the loss of three lives, including a pregnant woman and a teenage girl.

A third victim, a private security officer died on arrival at the hospital.

Reports indicate that a collision occurred between a tipper truck with registration number GT 7494 B and a [Aboboyaa] tricycle on that feeder road just before 6 pm, Thursday.

Officials say the impact of the head-on crash proved fatal, instantly claiming the lives of the three individuals whose ages range between 17 and 25.

A district NADMO co-ordinator in the Offinso North District who provided additional information to Asaase News said six others are battling life-threatening injuries at various health facilities including the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

“Because of the systems of transportation, the community uses motorbikes and tricycles to commute to and from Akumadan…So yesterday the pregnant woman was coming from ante-natal care, so she joined eight other occupants in the tricycle.”

“On reaching the middle of the road the tricycle veered off its lane and collided head-on with the truck. The bucket of the tricycle was carried away by the truck and the victims were left in the hands of God. And so, two people died on the spot while another, who is a private security officer died later in the evening”, he recounted.

“We are now heading to the police station to get some updates as we speak the husband of the pregnant woman is on his way to the north to perform some rituals per tradition. The bodies have been moved to the Nkenkensu Government Hospital morgue for awaiting autopsy”, Mamoah indicated.

It is the second accident recorded in the district within the last three weeks involving a tricycle. The NADMO Coordinator is calling for “a nationwide review of protocols regarding the use of non-traditional transportation systems in the country”.
