At least 40 students of the Ejuraman Anglican SHS in the Ashanti Region are in hospital following a collapse of the school’s dining hall.

The students were having their meals in the makeshift structure when the incident occurred Monday evening. Officials say at least 5 of the students are under intensive care while over 30 others are nursing minor injuries.

Officials of the Ghana National Fire Service say recent torrential rains in the Municipality have weakened structures exposing inhabitants to various hazards.

“To avoid any interference over there we have cordoned the place. We don’t want anyone to go there until further investigations to find the cause of the disaster and make recommendations”, explained a Commander with the Ejura Municipal Fire Service DO III Isaac Adu Yaw adding that investigations have begun.

“But so far we have recorded 40 people who have been injured”, he added.

“Five of them have had multiple fractures and are receiving intensive care treatment. The injuries of the 35 are being managed, so everything is under control.

“The health workers are doing their utmost best to ensure everyone is safe,” he said.
