In a collective effort to combat HIV-related stigma, AngloGold Ashanti, in collaboration with the AGA Health Foundation, GIZ, and the Otumfuo Foundation, has initiated a transformative campaign in the Amansie Central District town of Amamon.
The campaign aims to raise awareness, encourage HIV testing, and eradicate discriminatory attitudes within the community.
Edmund Oduro Agyei, Head of Stakeholder Engagement and Land Management at AngloGold Ashanti underscored the global significance of the HIV challenge.
The collaborative venture included a comprehensive health clinic in Amamon, offering services spanning HIV, Hepatitis, blood pressure, diabetes, and dental care.
Addressing the issue of HIV stigmatization, Mr Oduro Agyei highlighted the growing community awareness that effective medications exist to support individuals living with HIV. The initiative featured on-the-spot medical treatment for participants requiring immediate care.
Mr Agyei emphasized AngloGold Ashanti’s unwavering commitment to community engagement, aligning with their 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan. The plan prioritizes improving access to quality healthcare, reflecting the company’s dedication to making a positive impact on the community.
Emmanuel Ansah, AngloGold Ashanti Health Information Officer, discussed the rise in HIV cases in the Amansie Central District, linking it to galamsey activities. He encouraged citizens to utilize government-provided self-testing kits and emphasized the collective responsibility in these efforts.
Dr. Justin Sonaa Dakora, Principal Medical Officer of the AGA Health Foundation, advocated for the ABC approach (Abstinence, Being faithful, Condom use) to combat HIV/AIDS.
Nana Osei Nimako, the Bekwai Akwansrahene, expressed concern about AIDS-related stigma in Ghana. He urged the community to support individuals with HIV and underscored the importance of seeking medical assistance.
