Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has declared lawmakers of the governing New Patriotic Party in the House as the majority.

This includes the Independent Candidate for the Fomena Constituency, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, the Speaker said on Friday.

The declaration settles weeks of debate between members of the two main political parties in parliament on who can claim majority status.

The new parliament will be virtually split down the middle between the two main parties, posing the risk of gridlock with key issues on the agenda including how to turn around an economy hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
