Drivers at Atiwa East in the Eastern Region have lauded their Member of Parliament Abena Osei-Asare (MP) for launching the ‘Obaatanpa Empowerment Scheme’.

This ambitious initiative, which focuses on drivers and mechanics, follows a year of community engagements with four local driver unions.

The program’s inauguration took place following extensive engagements with four local driver unions over the past year.

The driver unions involved in these consultations include the Anyinam branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Papaye Cooperative Union, Enyiresi Drivers Union, and Sekyere Drivers Union.

Responding to their needs and aspirations, Hon. Osei-Asare partnered with Mr Kwawu Dodzi, CEO of Poseidon Engineering, to deliver nine taxi saloon cars and a truck, affectionately known as “Abossey Okai Macho,” for the initial phase of the Work, Pay, and Own scheme.

The initiative aims to provide drivers with the means to own their vehicles through manageable payment plans. All vehicles are comprehensively insured and registered at no cost to the beneficiaries, ensuring they can start their journeys towards ownership without financial burdens.

In addition to supporting drivers, the Obaatanpa Empowerment Program also extends aid to mechanics. Hon. Osei-Asare distributed 15 boxes of tools to 15 mechanic shops spread across the Atiwa East constituency, enabling these professionals to enhance their trade and service quality.

During the launch, Hon. Osei-Asare, who serves as Minister of State at the Finance Ministry emphasized the NPP government’s commitment to empowering individuals by providing the necessary support for meaningful employment.

She highlighted the importance of continued community support for their Flagbearer, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and her candidacy as the Parliamentary representative for Atiwa East, to sustain and expand such empowerment initiatives.

“The value we place on empowering our people is immense. We are dedicated to equipping you with the tools and opportunities to thrive in your work. Your support is crucial for us to continue these efforts and build a prosperous future together,” Hon Osei-Asare said in a Facebook post.

The launch of the Obaatanpa Empowerment Program marks a significant step in enhancing economic opportunities and livelihoods in the Eastern Region town.

As the program unfolds, it promises to bring about substantial positive change for drivers and mechanics, reinforcing the community’s economic resilience and growth.
