Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has established an emergency rent fund of GH¢100,000 to assist victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, which occurred in October 2023. This initiative aims to help affected residents find temporary accommodation as they continue to deal with the devastating aftermath of the disaster.
Ablakwa explained that his goal is to ensure the full resettlement and compensation of all those affected, which includes over 12,000 victims. He announced this plan after filing his nomination to run in the upcoming elections.
“For my next term, my priority will be the total resettlement and compensation of all victims of the VRA spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams. As we speak, 1,360 of my beloved constituents remain in tents, and that is unacceptable. That is inhumane,” Ablakwa stated.
He expressed his commitment to dedicating his efforts to achieving a comprehensive solution for the victims. “I am putting aside GH¢100,000 as emergency rent support for our brothers and sisters still in tents, with a focus on women, particularly nursing mothers,” he added.
