A 42-year-old man has been arrested and placed in custody, for allegedly attempting to sacrifice his daughter for money, officials say.
Evans Oppong, a resident of Fise, near Amasaman in Accra was arrested on Thursday (June 2), when he took his 11-year-old daughter to a native priest at Oyibi Kom, also in Accra, for ritual purposes, the police said in a statement Friday.
“The suspect’s arrest follows information provided by a patriotic citizen and we are grateful to him for his selfless service which has saved the life of the child involved”, the statement said.
The statement signed by a Police Director of Public Affairs Chief Superintendent Grace Ansah-Akrofi said the victim “is currently in the safe custody of the police while an effort is being made to reunite her with her mother and the rest of the family.”
Widespread condemnation
Narrating the incident on Facebook, the herbalist, Nana Adu-Boafo Jnr said the suspect picked up his daughter from school under the pretense of buying her a new dress.
He noted that Mr. Oppong’s intention was, however far from getting his daughter the promised attire.
“This man is a bad man with many evil intentions. He doesn’t even feel anything for his own girl. Wow, what a wicked soul,” he posted on Facebook.
According to Nana Adu-Boafo, the suspect tried to induce him with money, but nothing convinced him to perform such a cruel act.
Many Ghanaians have also been talking.
A former MP for Manhyia North in the Ashanti Region, Collins Owusu Amankwah said: “I am very angry after watching this video. May God save mankind.”
