A fire outbreak at a slum near Accra’s Central Business District has killed two people and rendering several squatters homeless, an official statement has confirmed.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), six fire tenders were deployed to the scene following a distress call at about 3:06 a.m., Sunday.
Fire crew met the raging fire sweeping through wooden structures used as homes and other commercial activities.
The remains of the two victims were later discovered after the inferno was declared under control.
“The dead, a female and a male have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for autopsy”, the statement from the GNFS indicated.
“The firefighters managed to salvage the Ghamot Assembly Plant, surrounding buildings and major part of the slums”, the GNFS said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, the statement noted.
