AFCON 2019: How Andre Ayew made history with his opener against Benin

Ghana international André Ayew scored his 9th goal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, moving him up to 13th all-time on the goalscorers table, level with Manucho of Angola and Abdoulaye Traoré of Ivory Coast.

The Ghanaian captain who has scored in the last two opening outings at the AFCON competition made it three goals out of three opening matches after scoring in the Black Stars’ 2-2 draw against the Squirrels of Benin Tuesday evening in Egypt.

Ayew made his senior debut in 2008 AFCON tournament hosted in Ghana and scored his first goal at the 2010 showpiece hosted by Angola. Nine years later, the Swansea City star who was on loan at Fernerbache last season has surpassed teammate, Asamoah Gyan as the country’s top scorer in the history of the Black Stars at the continental showpiece.

The 29-year-old midfielder who can also play as a winger has made 82 senior appearances for Ghana, scoring an impressive 15 goals in the process.

The 2011 BBC African Player of the Year and charismatic leader will lead his side in quest of their first victory in the competition when Ghana take on Cameroon in the second group game on Saturday at 17:00GMT
