Cameroon secured a thrilling victory in a five-goal spectacle against Gambia, propelling them into the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The first half unfolded in a lackluster manner, remaining goalless and leaving fans on the edge of their seats. However, the second half proved to be a rollercoaster, witnessing Cameroon taking the lead three times amidst Gambia’s historic two goals against the formidable Indomitable Lions.

Despite being 80 places below Cameroon in the FIFA rankings, Gambia dominated the first-half exchanges. Cameroon, rejuvenated after halftime, saw Georges-Kevin Nkoudou nearly breaking the deadlock in the 50th minute, followed by him setting up Karl Toko Ekambi’s opening goal six minutes later.

Toko Ekambi, a veteran from Cameroon’s 2017 Cup of Nations-winning team, showcased his experience by skillfully heading a long through ball. Gambia responded fiercely, with Ablie Jallow equalizing in the 72nd minute through a clever volley, adding suspense to the unfolding drama.

Gambia had an opportunity to take the lead as Alieu Fadera’s shot grazed the outside of the post. However, they eventually surged ahead in the 85th minute when substitute Ebrima Colley, in tandem with Assan Ceesay, executed a clever one-two pass, allowing Colley to unleash a powerful shot.

With time running out, Cameroon needed two goals, and they leveled the score when James Gomez unintentionally steered the ball into his own net in a desperate attempt to clear. The breathtaking conclusion unfolded as Wooh secured the winner, setting the stage for a riveting last-16 clash with Nigeria in Abidjan on Saturday.

Cameroon’s tactical adjustments included dropping Andre Onana, who had featured in their previous 3-1 defeat to Senegal, and reinstating Fabrice Ondoa in goal. Ondoa, initially unassured, redeemed himself with crucial saves to thwart Gambia’s offens ive efforts.
