The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) reached the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals without winning a game in regular time. In the round of 16, they beat Egypt, who also struggled to win in regular time. The match took place at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium against Guinea.

DRC hasn’t won a game in Cote d’Ivoire, but they managed to make it to the last eight by defeating Egypt on penalties. Lionel M’Pasi became the hero by scoring from the spot, securing their first knockout victory since 2015 when they reached the semi-finals.

Despite this success, there are concerns that relying on extra time and penalties might hinder DRC’s progress in the tournament. Their next challenge is against Guinea, who secured a knockout stage win for the first time in their history, beating Equatorial Guinea with a late Mohamed Bayo header.

Guinea progressed as the best third-placed team, being the only remaining side from Group C. Now, they aim to reach the AFCON 2023 semi-finals. The team scored three times in four games and hopes to be more productive in the final third to avoid quarter-final elimination.

Both teams have had varied forms in the Africa Cup of Nations and other competitions. DRC has a record of DDDW in AFCON and DLDDDW overall. Guinea, on the other hand, has a DWLW record in AFCON and LWDWLW overall. The upcoming quarter-final clash between these two teams promises an exciting encounter at the continental showpiece.
