The Democratic Republic of Congo secured its place in the Africa Cup of Nations last 16 with a 0-0 draw against Tanzania on Wednesday, marking the end of the road for the Taifa Stars in the competition.

Despite a lack of quality in the final third, Yoane Wissa of Brentford came close to scoring, testing Tanzania’s goalkeeper Aishi Manula in the first half and attempting a late chip from the left-hand edge of the box.

This draw, the third in as many matches, allowed DR Congo to claim the second spot in Group F, trailing behind Morocco, who secured a 1-0 victory over Zambia simultaneously. The Congolese team will now prepare for a last-16 clash against Egypt on Sunday, set to take place in the coastal city of San-Pedro.

In contrast, Tanzania’s journey in the tournament came to an end, accumulating only two points and finishing at the bottom of the group. The Taifa Stars have yet to secure a victory in the Cup of Nations, having failed to do so in nine attempts across three appearances at the finals.

The disruption in Tanzania’s campaign in Ivory Coast was exacerbated by the dismissal of coach Adel Amrouche after their initial 3-0 loss to Morocco.

Amrouche faced an eight-game ban and fines from the Confederation of African Football due to comments made about the Moroccan team. Hemed Suleiman assumed caretaker responsibilities for the subsequent two matches, but Tanzania’s failure to overcome 10-man Zambia in their second outing proved costly for their aspirations in the tourn ament.
