Chris Hughton, the coach of the Black Stars, openly expressed his regret and offered an apology to the people of Ghana following the team’s defeat against Cape Verde last Sunday. The late goal in that match marked the third consecutive Africa Cup of Nations without the Black Stars securing an opening victory, a fact that left Hughton noticeably disappointed.
The defeat has put Ghana in a tough spot, necessitating a victory in their upcoming match against the formidable seven-time champions, Egypt. The setback unfolded as the Black Stars conceded a goal after just 17 minutes, with Jamiro Monteiro easily tapping in a rebound.
Despite a disallowed shot from Majeed Ashimeru right before halftime, the Black Stars managed to secure a well-deserved equalizer in the second half. Alexander Djiku’s header from a corner kick leveled the playing field. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived as comical defending allowed Cape Verde to score a late winner through Garry Rodrigues.
Expressing his disappointment, Hughton said, “We are incredibly hugely disappointed with the result. We came into the game with a game plan to start on the front foot.”
Looking ahead to the crucial match against Egypt on Thursday, the Black Stars face the looming risk of an early exit, a scenario reminiscent of the previous tournament. Nevertheless, the team is determined to learn from their mistakes and put in the effort needed for success in the Africa Cup of Nations.
