Under the radiant sun of Stade Bouake, anticipation builds for a Group D clash as Burkina Faso and Mauritania lock horns in the opening match on a Tuesday afternoon.

Eager to build on recent successes, the Stallions, who reached the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals twice in the last three editions, aspire to replicate their 2013 journey to the final. Meanwhile, the Lions of Chinguetti aim for their maiden tournament victory.

Considered AFCON dark horses, Burkina Faso has reached the semifinals or final in three of the last five editions. Despite a bumpy qualification journey, they secured the top spot in their group ahead of Cape Verde, Togo, and Swaziland.

Guided by experienced coach Hubert Velud, Burkina Faso is poised to vie for the top two spots in Group D alongside Algeria, Angola, and Mauritania. On the pitch, their recent form is positive, with three victories in their last five matches, including a 2-1 win over DR Congo in the final warm-up. However, internal conflicts within the football association pose a potential challenge.

Having faced Mauritania in a friendly in October 2023, Burkina Faso holds an edge with two wins and a draw in their four encounters. Yet, this marks their first meeting at the AFCON. A positive start in the opening match becomes pivotal in the race for the top two spots, especially if Algeria dominates the group.

Mauritania, qualifying for three consecutive AFCONs since 2019, seeks their first tournament win. Overcoming challenges, including sanctions in 2010, they’ve made strides off the pitch, translating into improved on-field results.

Under coach Amir Abdou, with an impressive AFCON debut with Comoros, Mauritania aims to progress beyond the group stage. While a goalless draw with Tunisia in their last warm-up provides some encouragement, Abdou is mindful of the team’s goal-scoring struggles in the last three matches.

Burkina Faso’s recent form in all competitions reads DWDWLW, while Mauritania’s stands at WWLLDD. The outcome of the opening match carries significant weight in determining the fate of these two teams in Group D.
