Teboho Mokoena, the skillful midfielder, earned the title of Man of the Match for his impressive performance in the match where South Africa triumphed over Morocco, leading to Morocco’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Morocco, known as the Atlas Lions and considered a strong contender for the AFCON title, faced off against Bafana Bafana at Laurent Pokou Stadium in a Round of 16 fixture on a Tuesday night.

Despite Morocco’s dominance in the game, the first half concluded with no goals, credit to South Africa’s solid defense that held their ground.

The turning point arrived in the 57th minute when Bafana Bafana capitalized on their first significant opportunity, with Evidence Makgopa finding the net against the flow of the game, giving South Africa the lead.

In the 85th minute, Morocco had a chance to level the score when a penalty was awarded to the favorites. Unfortunately, Achraf Hakimi’s attempt hit the crossbar and went out of play, dashing Morocco’s hopes of equalizing.

Adding to Morocco’s woes, in the added time, Teboho Mokoena sealed the victory for South Africa with a direct free-kick, securing a delightful 2-0 win and eliminating Morocco from the tournament.

Teboho Mokoena’s stellar performance did not go unnoticed, and he was rightfully awarded the Man of the Match for his crucial contributions in the game against Morocco. His standout moments, including the decisive free-kick, played a pivotal role in South Africa’s success and advancement in the AFCON tournament.
