Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Friday, paid a courtesy call on ex-Ghanaian leader John Mahama at his office in Accra.
The Asante monarch’s visit to the flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) was ahead of a lecture the king was scheduled to deliver at the University of Professional Studies, Accra.
Joined by top NDC executives and some Members of Parliament to welcome his guest, Mr Mahama said the meeting was an opportunity to discuss critical national issues.
“Otumfuo Asantehene and I have always had a relationship underlined by mutual respect and brotherliness, and it was indeed a great honour to welcome him and his delegation,” Mr. Mahama posted on his facebook wall.
It comes after a speech delivered by the Asante Monarch at a recent UN event in New York seemed to spark agitations among top NDC members.
In that speech, the Asante King said it took the intervention of the Manhyia Palace for the loser in the last election to concede defeat and keep the peace.
But NDC National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo told reporters that the visit has nothing to do with that, adding that the discussion was “fruitful”.
It is gathered that the King had about 30 minutes closed-door meeting with the former President.
Former NDC appointees, party executives and Members of Parliament interacted with the King after the two emerged from the office.
