The office of the Attorney General (AG) is expected to begin processes to transfer the Konongo Odumase Senior High School murder case to the High Court to commence trial, state prosecutors have said.

The case involves five students of the school who are facing murder charges after a Form 1 student, Larhan Sam’un, died from stab wounds during a scuffle on a weekend. A key suspect is said to have admitted to the crime when senior colleagues embarked on a bullying spree on that fateful day.

Police prosecutors on Monday, November 29, told the Konongo District Court they are awaiting an advice from the AG’s office as part of the process. They thus prayed for an adjournment.

The court presided over by Her Worship Joyce Bamfo remanded the suspects into a juvenile cell and adjourned the case to December 6.

Head of Legal and Prosecution at the Ashanti Regional Police Command Chief Superintendent Kofi Blagodzi said: ‘We came to pray the court for an adjournment so that we wait for the AG’s advice which will come very soon and after that we shall transfer the case to the High Court for the substantive issue to be heard’.

‘There will be no committals and we made it clear to the court that the State is so much interested in the case and a supervising Judge is set for the High Court to hear the substantive case’, he further explained.

Larhan’s death sparked widespread condemnation from the Ghanaian public including the country’s Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Dr Adutwum said such acts of indiscipline should not be tolerated in the 21st Century, rather, the right environment, devoid of intimidation, should be created for students to perform well academically.

The Education Minister indicated that such acts had led to some students being maimed, citing the recent case at the Konongo Odumase Senior High School where an alleged bullying had led to the death of a student.

Dr Adutwum expressed regret that bullying scenarios had been part of the school culture but the “time has come for us to end this because homo is a thing of the past”.
