A footbridge collapse due to heavy rains at Ahwiaa on Thursday, has stranded hundreds of commuters in the area.

Located in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region, the bridge, constructed on a stream, linking Ahwiaa to other adjoining towns in the district is now a death trap.

Our Ashanti Regional Correspondent who visited the scene Friday morning reports that the situation has affected trading activities.

Low enrolment has also been recorded in schools as parts of the bridge have been washed away.

Assemblyman for Ahwiaa Ebuom, Kwaku Afrifa Tawiah says the lives of residents in the area are in danger if the bridge is not repaired.

“This morning children found it very difficult to cross the bridge. It will be a disaster if the bridge is not fixed”, the assemblyman explained adding that, “I have been in touch with NADMO and other relevant officials who are yet to assess the situation”.

Kumasi floods: Death toll hits two

Early this week two lives were lost following torrential rains that hit parts of the Ashanti Region.

Over two hundred residents were affected in communities like Atonsu S-Line, Sokoban, Atonsu and other adjoining districts.

The Meteorological Service Department has predicted more rains in the coming days.
