The Minister of Works and Housing has requested additional funds to support phase one of the Akosombo Dam spillage resettlement program.
In response to the dam’s spillage, the government allocated GH¢200 million to the Ministry for resettling those affected. However, Rev. Stephen Yaw Osei, Chief Director of the Ministry, has called for an extra GH¢200 million to cover consultancy fees and land compensation as part of the ongoing resettlement efforts.
Rev. Osei explained that the total projected cost for the resettlement project is GH¢600 million. To complete the resettlement within a year, the Ministry requires the full amount. If the project extends over two or three years, he noted, an additional GH¢200 million per year would be necessary.
“The projected cost for the entire project is about GH¢600 million, but we currently have GH¢200 million,” Rev. Osei stated. “To complete the resettlement process within a year, we need the full GH¢600 million. If the project is extended to two years, we would require an additional GH¢200 million to make a total of GH¢400 million. For a three-year extension, we would need GH¢200 million annually. Therefore, we are requesting additional funds to ensure the resettlement process is expedited. We have identified and prioritized the affected homes and are seeking the necessary funding to move forward.”
