The Volta River Authority (VRA) anticipates minimal damage in the upcoming phase of water spillage from the Akosombo Dam. The VRA has announced plans for a possible controlled spillage in the coming weeks, aiming to mitigate the impact based on lessons learned from the previous year.
Director of Environment and Sustainable Development at the VRA, Ben Sackey, emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement in preparation for the spillage. “Every year, we conduct an education on the latest spill. The district assembly can bear witness to that since 2011. However, the number of participants was limited. Given recent events, we have engaged a lot more people,” he explained.
The last spillage, which began on September 15, 2023, displaced approximately 39,000 residents and resulted in significant loss of farmlands. The spillage was intensified for three weeks to protect the dam’s structural integrity.
As a consequence, eight districts across three regions—Asuogyaman, Shai Osudoku, North Tongu, Central Tongu, South Tongu, Anlo, Keta Municipal, Ketu South Municipal, and Ada East—experienced severe flooding.
