President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaian universities to enhance their partnerships with industry and government to ensure that their research and teaching contribute to the nation’s development objectives.
Speaking on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at the commissioning of the Silver Jubilee Building at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, President Akufo-Addo emphasized his government’s substantial investment in the education sector, recognizing it as a critical tool for national transformation.
He highlighted the impact of the No Guarantor Policy, which has greatly expanded access to tertiary education by removing financial barriers, thus opening opportunities for many young Ghanaians. “Our substantial support for research and academic development reflects our belief in the power of knowledge to drive national progress,” the President remarked.
The commissioning of the new three-storey Silver Jubilee Building, which includes lecture halls and offices, marks a “significant milestone” in the government’s commitment to advancing education in Ghana. President Akufo-Addo described the structure as more than just a building, stating that it represents a shared vision for a brighter future and a commitment to providing quality education for all.
Reflecting on a promise he made in 2018 during UDS’s 25th-anniversary celebration, the President expressed pride in fulfilling that commitment, ensuring that the university continues to flourish as a center for innovation and intellectual growth.
As the nation celebrates this achievement, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his call for universities to strengthen their ties with industry and government. “Together, we are building a brighter future for Ghana, and I am confident that with continued investment in education, we can unleash the full potential of our young people and propel our country to greater heights,” he wrote on Facebook following the event.
