The Office of the President has dismissed media reports alleging that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted a presidential pardon to 11 individuals, describing them as false and baseless.

In a statement released on January 6, 2025, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, clarified that the President has not exercised his prerogative of mercy to pardon any individuals, contrary to claims circulating in some media outlets.

The reports had alleged that among those pardoned was William Ato Essien, who had been sentenced to 15 years in prison after failing to pay a GHS90 million fine. Essien, the former CEO of the collapsed Capital Bank, is said to be suffering from serious health issues. Other individuals named in the reports included Philip Akpeena Assibit, convicted in 2018 for causing financial loss to the state, and Akwasi Alhassan, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence since 1993.

However, the statement from the Presidency strongly denied these allegations, stating, “We wish to categorically state that these assertions are inaccurate, and no pardon has been granted by President Akufo-Addo.”

The Office of the President urged the public to disregard such misinformation and rely only on verified announcements from official channels.

“Any contrary claims should be ignored as they do not reflect the truth,” the statement emphasized.
