Odododiodioo Member of Parliament Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, claiming that the outgoing leader will leave office without a meaningful legacy. According to Vanderpuye, the president’s tenure has been characterized by self-praise and exaggerated claims rather than genuine achievements.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, January 3, 2025, Vanderpuye said, “The President was consistent in one thing: praising himself when he didn’t deserve praise and also presenting figures and scenarios that were not factual.”

The MP specifically targeted the president’s performance in sports development, describing it as inadequate and failing to meet the aspirations of Ghanaians. Vanderpuye argued that the president’s leadership in the sector showed neglect and poor performance.

“On the issue of sports, for example, a president who always wants to be seen as a person who is perfect and has performed excellently. In the area of sports where he has performed so poorly, how would you want him to talk about it? This is because he accepts the fact that sports is one area where he has performed so poorly,” Vanderpuye remarked.

He extended his criticism to youth development initiatives, accusing the government of falling short despite programs like NABCO and Planting for Food and Jobs. “Youth development is also one area the government has performed so poorly. This is because in spite of all the so-called interventions—NABCO, planting for food and jobs—all indicators show that the president failed in those areas,” he said.

Vanderpuye’s comments followed President Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address, delivered in Parliament on January 3. Reflecting on his presidency, Akufo-Addo described it as “the greatest honour of his life,” acknowledging the significant challenges and successes that defined his administration. He emphasized that his time in office demanded his full energy, commitment, and love for Ghana.
