Ghanaian leader Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has decided to take up the cost for the surgery to separate the conjoined twins at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).
The operation is expected to cost about GHC 15 million and it will be carried out over a period of one year. It is the first time such a surgical procedure will be undertaken in Ghana, according to health officials.
Announcing the decision of government on behalf of the president at the Ridge Hospital on Monday 5 July 2021, the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Akosua Frema Osei Opare noted that Akufo-Addo has instructed that all resources needed to carry out the procedure should be made available to the hospital without delay.
The lead surgeon for the planned separation of the conjoined twins, Dr Samuel Kaba, said a team of about 160 medical and non medical staff will be involved in the entire process.
