President Akufo-Addo is set to address the nation on measures his administration has put in place to intensify the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 28th address, which will be delivered at 8 pm, is expected to outline key interventions that would be implemented going forward to reduce the spread and transmission of the virus.

One of the anticipated announcements include the easing of restrictions at the country’s land borders after they were closed on March 22, 2020.

Following the decline in Covid-19 cases, citizens, particularly those along the borders, have asked for it to be reopened.

The call for the re-opening of the land borders was joined by Former President John Mahama, who said, “the long border closures have devastated the economy of our border communities.”

His call was followed by an announcement by the Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who said government has held various meetings over the issue.

But Mr Mahama argued that “government’s announcement that it is deliberating at Cabinet about a possible opening of our land borders is long overdue. Let’s open the land borders now!”

President Akufo-Addo will deliver the 28th Covid-19 address later today at 8 pm.

Despite several appeals to the government by lawmakers from the land border communities for the borders to be opened, the government has argued that opening the borders would lead to the importation of more Covid-19 cases.
