Alan Kyerematen, the founder and leader of the Movement for Change, has strongly criticized Ghana’s Ministry of Information, labeling it a “waste pipe” and questioning its relevance within the government’s current structure.
During a recent media interaction, Kyerematen argued that the Ministry fails to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development, thereby becoming a drain on resources. He posed a critical question: “What does the Ministry of Information actually do?” Kyerematen further noted that similar ministries do not exist in more advanced economies. “It’s a waste of time. That ministry does not add anything. I’m sorry to all my friends in the Ministry of Information, but you would make more money and be more productive in business than sitting in that department,” he stated.
Reflecting on his experience in the early 1980s, Kyerematen recalled his involvement in overhauling the Ministry of Information and establishing the Information Services Department (ISD). He emphasized his contributions, saying, “When you do good work, the record is always there. My name is there, so I know what I’m talking about.”
Kyerematen concluded by suggesting that the resources allocated to the Ministry of Information could be redirected to more critical areas of need. “You don’t need a Ministry of Information. You can save a lot of money and use it to support other important sectors,” he asserted.
