New Patriotic Party(NPP) flagbearer hopeful Alan Kyerematen has donated ¢100,000 to traders whose goods were burnt at the Kejetia Market complex.
Mr Kyerematen announced the donation when he visited the facility on Friday (24 March). The fire ravaged portions of the market on Wednesday (March 15), destroying shops, goods and cash worth millions. The market was shut down but later reopened to business after a 72-hour assessment and initial investigations.
The former Trades Minister who met with the victims conveyed his sympathy and pledged support for the traders in assuaging their loss.
“I sympathize with all of you in this unfortunate moment. As traders, your concerns affect all Ghanaians. We are however grateful that no lives were lost”, Kyerematen said as he promised to engage the government to ensure the implementation of the measures in its committee’s report on the fire outbreak.
Mr Kyeramaten is also seeking an expedited completion of phase II of the Kejetia Market which stands suspended due to the country’s ongoing domestic exchange programme.
“If phase II of this market is not completed, it will be a big inconvenience to all traders. I, therefore, implore the government to speed up efforts to enable the contractor to come back to work on the project as soon as possible”, he said as he urged the traders to respect fire safety protocols to avoid such disasters.
Nana Sakina, a representative of the Market Queen expressed appreciation at the gesture of the NPP flagbearer when she received the cash on behalf of the victims. She asked for God’s blessings for the NPP flagbearer hopeful.
“You’ve shown that you are caring and considerate and for you to cut short your nationwide tour to visit us in our time of need shows you are a good man. We pray God’s favour for you as you seek to lead the NPP and Ghana”, Madam Sakina said.
