Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central, expressed deep gratitude after the Sekondi High Court lifted an injunction that had previously barred her from running for the seat. Reflecting on the decision, Cudjoe stated, “God has vindicated” her.
The legal challenges began after Cudjoe’s decisive victory in the NDC’s May 2023 parliamentary primaries. Discontented party members filed a lawsuit, resulting in an injunction that temporarily blocked her recognition as the party’s candidate. In response, the NDC’s Functional Executive Committee annulled the May primary results and held fresh primaries on September 8, 2024, where Cudjoe again emerged victorious.
Despite her reaffirmed win, the Electoral Commission later disqualified her, referencing the earlier injunction related to the contested May election. The NDC pursued legal recourse by filing a new case at the Sekondi High Court after an attempt to halt the Electoral Commission’s preparations for the Amenfi Central election was dismissed by the Accra High Court.
On November 11, 2024, His Lordship George K. Gyan-Kontoh ruled that the circumstances surrounding the initial injunction had changed, especially given the NDC’s annulment of the May primary and the subsequent fresh election. The judge also noted that the incumbent MP, Kwakye Ackah, had chosen not to participate in the new primaries, reinforcing Cudjoe’s candidacy. As a result, the court removed the injunction, clearing her to contest in the December elections.
In a heartfelt interview with Citi News, Cudjoe expressed relief and appreciation for the support she received. “We thank God for everything that has happened today, especially my new lawyers who came in to rescue me… I thank God and all the NDC members, executives, and all the Western Region NDC. I must say I am very happy,” she shared.
Cudjoe urged her supporters in Amenfi Central to celebrate this legal victory and announced her plans to officially launch her campaign. “I have done no wrong. My only wrong was contesting and winning an election, and God indeed has proven people wrong…So I am coming home, and we will do our campaign launch and proceed with all we have to do. I know people are awaiting my arrival, so they should make merry because God has made this happen,” she added.
