The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken on Ghana’s Roads Minister, claiming he is out of touch with reality, while questioning the government’s claim of performing better in terms of road infrastructure in the Ashanti Region.

At a media interaction, Roads Minister, Amoako Atta, who paid a working visit to Kumasi earlier this week claimed that the current government had undertaken massive road infrastructure projects in the country than any other regime.

Touting the successes chalked by the Akufo-Addo-led administration, the Minister noted that plans are far advanced to get the about 156 road projects in the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area completed.

But at a press conference in Kumasi on Wednesday, the Ashanti Regional branch of the opposition party described the claims as baseless and outrageous, adding that the Minister was either misled or incompetent.

“Conveniently, the Minister chose to focus on roads in the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area where they have something little to show,” said Abass Nurudeen, the Ashanti Regional NDC Communication Director while listing the massive road projects executed by the Mills-Mahama government.

“For the avoidance of doubt, for the past eight years Prof Mills and John Mahama were in office, more than 400 kilometer stretch of roads were constructed in the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area that the Minister claimed no single kilometer of road has been constructed for the past 14 years. We find these claims outrageous and unfactual, and it is unbecoming of a Minister,” he further stated during an interview.

Many Ghanaians have been lamenting the poor state of their roads which they say has taken a toll on their socioeconomic growth.

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, however, reiterated government’s commitment to fixing all deplorable roads as he declared 2020 as a ‘Year of Roads‘.
