AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine has taken a proactive step towards gender diversity in the mining sector by inducting 25 individuals, with 50% of them women, into its graduate trainee program.

This mentorship initiative aims to provide training opportunities for graduate students in the mining industry.

Adinorta Nti-Yeboah, Human Resources Manager at AngloGold Ashanti, emphasized the company’s deliberate policy to offer more women opportunities in the mining sector, where female representation currently stands at less than 13%.

She stated that AngloGold Ashanti is committed to changing this narrative and giving women a chance to contribute significantly to the industry.

The graduation and induction ceremony also celebrated nine young graduates who successfully completed a year of training in the program.

Nti-Yeboah highlighted how the graduate trainee program is shaping promising professionals with significant potential in the mining sector, emphasizing its status as a flagship initiative of AngloGold Ashanti.

The program encompasses various forms of training, including on-the-job training and leadership development, to equip participants with the skills needed to excel in the mining industry. Trainees are also encouraged to undertake initiatives that provide business solutions and improve cost efficiency, safety, and operational effectiveness.

Nti-Yeboah advocated for more internship programs within the extractive industry to bridge the gap between academia and industry. Graduates who have experienced hands-on training through such programs, like Hajiah Hammidu, expressed how it boosted their confidence and teamwork skills, making them more prepared for careers in the mining sector.

Overall best graduate trainee, Nana Adom Frimpong, praised AngloGold Ashanti’s impactful training program, highlighting the importance of practical experience alongside formal education for graduates entering the job market. He called for an increased focus on skills development in the educational sector to better align graduates with job market demands.
