One of the victims of the devastating Appiatse explosion has died, authorities have announced.
The Appiatse Disaster Relief Committee gave the name of the deceased as Ante Ama Nsowaa, 59. She reportedly died at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after battling severe injury.
“She sustained an injury on the left limb and because she was diabetic it affected the healing process and so she was amputated by medics at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. The Committee had dispatched a wheel chair to the hospital for her to use only for us to be hit with this sad news this dawn”, an official told dailymailgh.com.
This brings the death toll in the January 20 incident to 15.
The explosion occurred when a motorcycle went under a truck carrying explosives that was on route to the Chirano gold mine, run by Canada-based Kinross.
A Kinross spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying it occurred 140km (87 miles) from the mine located in the Prestea-Huni-Valley District of the Western Region.
