A group of about twenty armed men, led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, stormed the private residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, on the morning of Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
The raid took place at Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge home in Accra while he was present. Witnesses described the heavily armed men, some wearing balaclavas and carrying AK-47 rifles, as they entered the premises to conduct a search.
According to Asaase News, the security team immediately disabled the CCTV system upon arrival before demanding that Dr. Addison lead them to “vaults” inside his house. In response, the former governor, visibly shocked, reportedly told them, “I have no vaults or any such cache of cash at home.”
Despite his insistence, the security personnel proceeded to search the house thoroughly, allegedly turning the property upside down. However, sources revealed that no vaults or large sums of cash were discovered. Following the unsuccessful search, the team seized the CCTV monitor and control unit before leaving the premises.
A close associate of the Addison family disclosed that Dr. Addison, his wife, and their entire household were left deeply shaken by the raid.
A retired senior official of the Bank of Ghana, reacting to the incident, expressed grave concern: “This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a thing is happening to a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This is both scary and messy.”
This is not the first time Mr. Jakpa has led such an operation targeting high-profile former officials of the Akufo-Addo administration. On February 10, 2025, a similar raid was carried out at the Labone residence of Ghana’s longest-serving Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, by over fifteen armed men. That operation was recorded by CCTV cameras at the property, with the footage later made public.
The latest raid has sparked widespread concerns about the treatment of former government officials under the current administration.
