The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, has sent a strong message to those inciting violence in Bawku, warning that any attack on civilians or military personnel will be treated as an act of extremism and addressed with full force.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday after visiting the conflict-stricken town in Ghana’s Upper East Region, Major General Gbetanu emphasized the military’s firm commitment to dealing with violent groups.
“I’ll serve a word of caution to all, especially those fomenting the trouble in Bawku, that their days are getting numbered,” he said firmly. “Any attack on innocent civilians or any military personnel will be considered as an act of extremism and will be met with the deliberate full strength and resolve of our forces.”
He made it clear that the Ghana Armed Forces will not tolerate lawlessness and warned that those responsible for violence will have nowhere to hide.
“We will pursue every individual involved. And justice will be served,” he vowed.
Addressing the youth directly, Major General Gbetanu urged them to abandon violence and choose the path of peace and development.
“Lay down your arms, return to the path of peace. Your future does not lie in bloodshed but in building, learning, and growing your country,” he advised.
As part of his visit, the Army Chief paid a courtesy call on the Kusaug Traditional Council. He called for close cooperation between traditional leaders and the military to help bring peace to the area.
He also appealed to the chiefs to play a role in guiding the youth and discouraging hostile behavior toward soldiers, emphasizing that respect and collaboration are key to ensuring stability.
This visit was Major General Gbetanu’s first official tour of Bawku since assuming his position as Chief of Army Staff.
