Ghana Premier League powerhouse Asante Kotoko have announced the appointment of former Black Stars coach Mariano Barreto as their new head coach.

The Portuguese tactician had stints with clubs like Marítimo in Portugal, Al-Nassr FC, Naval 1º de Maio, AEL Limassol, Recreativo do Libolo and Al-Qadisiyah in his coaching career.

The Kumasi-based club made the announcement through their social media handles on Friday, March 26 to confirm the appointment of the new manager.

Barreto has served as assistant coach at Russian Premier League sides Dynamo Moscow and Kuban Krasnodar before being out of job for a while now.

Kotoko sacked Maxwell Konadu very early in the 2020-21 Ghana Premier League season and gave the job to Johnson Smith on an interim basis.

Due to lack of certification by coach Smith, the management of the Porcupine Warriors hired Abdul Gazale as the new head coach of the team two months ago but have decided to replace him with the Portuguese gaffer after the team failed to qualify into the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup competition.

Barreto will begin work on Monday ahead of the weekend clash in Techiman against Eleven Wonders after penning a two-year contract with a one-year option to renew last Wednesday.
