A group calling itself the Asante Youth for Culture and Development has issued a stern warning to political parties and media organizations, accusing them of disrespecting the revered Asante King, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The group expressed outrage over recent inflammatory comments made on Onua TV and demanded an immediate apology from Media General, the parent company of the station.

During ‘Biribi Gyegye Wo’ on Onua TV, a panelist named Afia Pokua and the host of the programme known as Mona Gucci criticised Otumfuo for staying silent while some of his citizens launched verbal attacks on the Dormaa people and their Chief, Nana Agyemang Badu I. Their comments sparked backlash and also invoked the anger of many, especially Ashantis.

Addressing the media on Friday (20 September) the Asante Youth Association condemned what it described as “unguarded and inflammatory discussions” aired on the TV station’s programs.

According to the convener, Kwadwo Osei Hyeaman, these discussions, spearheaded by show hosts and panelists, crossed all boundaries of respect, targeting the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and Asanteman, thereby fueling division within the region.

“We demand that Media General renders an unqualified apology to Otumfuo and Asanteman. To the show hosts and panelists who have contributed to these unprovoked attacks, we serve this clear message to you: you will be held accountable for your words and actions,” Osei Hyeaman stated.

The group made it clear that Asanteman would not overlook the damage caused by such inflammatory rhetoric. They called for immediate reconciliation, urging all parties to put an end to divisive commentary.

The group reiterated that they will continue to defend the dignity of the Asante Kingdom and ensure that no one, regardless of their status or platform, disrespects their King and their cherished traditions.
