A man was shot dead at a village bar in Bonkro, near Mankranso in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region.

The deceased Kwaku Vasco, 40, a resident of Nerebehi was in the village to observe a final funeral rites when the unfortunate incident occurred at about 2p.m., on Friday, December 3.

A police report said the deceased had gone to the bar with his friends to buy four bottles of soft drinks at the cost of ¢20 and paid to the attendant. But a misunderstanding broke out after his attacker, who is yet to be identified, accused him and his friends of not paying for the drinks, an allegation he denied.

The suspect who stays about 20 meters from the drinking spot went home, hurriedly came back with a locally manufactured and fired gunshots hitting the chest of the deceased.

“On seeing that bullets hit the deceased the suspect threw the gun away and fled into the bush”, the police report said. Kwaku Vasco was rushed to the Mankranso Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police have since retrieved the weapon as an exhibit. A case of murder is being investigated. The security agency will however not confirm whether the suspect has been arrested.

The development has left residents of Bonkro in a state of shock. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Plus Lab Mortuary at Mankranso.
