A member of a robbery gang was gunned down during a shootout with personnel from the Ghana Police Service, a police statement said on Saturday as it confirms two of the armed gang were arrested.
The incident occurred on Thursday, December 2, at about 7:30 a.m., following reports that the robbers were attacking some miners at Oseikrom, a community near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
Police officers who were responding to the distress call had an encounter with the robbers who started firing at the team while approaching the crime scene. The police also returned fire fire leading to the death of one of them while the rest fled the scene.
The statement further confirms that two suspects; Richard Nkrumah alias Paa Yaw and Alex Appiah alias Ameley were also arrested at about 12 noon the same day, following an intelligence-led operation.
“During interrogation, the suspects mentioned one Emmanuel alias Awoloh, a driver of the miners as the mastermind of the robbery operation”, the statement revealed adding: “Strenuous intelligence and operational efforts later led to the arrest of Emmanuel”.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Obuasi Government Hospital for preservation and identification.
While commending the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP/Mr Afful Boakye Yiadom and his team in Obuasi for the swift action the police administration further assured the public of “our resolve to weed out armed groups in our communities to ensure socio-economic activities are carried out in a peaceful and safe environment”.
