The Ghana Water Company says it is building up dockets for some 66 customers in the Ashanti Region to face prosecution over non-payment of their water bills.

Speaking at a community engagement in Moshie-Zongo as part of activities to mark this year’s World Water Day, Ashanti North Regional Manager at the GWCL Francis Mensah encouraged customers to make diligent payments of their bills.

He adds that the company is in touch with security agencies to get defaulters with huge arrears to face court.

“People easily go on their own to pay electricity bills but wait until we come to them for the bills. What we have decided to do is to process those who have huge arrears to court. We have started with about 66 of such customers and very soon they will appear before a court,” Mr Mensah indicated.

The Company also expressed concern about the alarming rate of water meter theft in its operational districts in the region. Such cases Mr Mensah said are widespread in Aboabo, Moshie-Zongo and adjoining communities. Mr Francis Mensah told journalists that such illegal activities affect the company’s operations as he seeks support from the public to end the menace.

“We have been experiencing water thefts and the worse is Moshe Zongo, Aboabo and other areas. Our men on the field report not less than 10-meter thefts and the meters are very expensive this time we want to instal smart meters and still, people steal them.”
