Residents of Dannso in the Bosome Freho District of the Ashanti Region staged another protest on Friday, December 15, opposing the government’s community mining program.

Holding placards, they urgently called on Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to stop what they consider a looming crisis.

The Minerals Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources launched the community mining initiative on November 22 in the area, aiming to create jobs and promote responsible mining. However, residents vehemently opposed it, citing adverse effects on their lives.

Angered by the state-sponsored activity, the residents fear that the community mining project will worsen this situation, jeopardizing their only source of potable water.

“We face a lot of challenges including bad roads, and yet the government has ignored us. Authorities want to worsen our plight by introducing this mining programme which will have far-reaching consequences on our livelihoods”, said Kwaku Tawiah a spokesperson of the group.

“We will not allow this to happen. We are farmers, not miners. We know this message would reach the Asantehene who is a strong advocate of climate change and food security. We pray that his intervention would prevent this disaster in waiting”, he added.
