The police have confirmed the arrest of three people in connection with recent clashes in the Kwabre Municipal capital of Mamponteng in the Ashanti Region.
Violence erupted late Monday (27 December) among the youth in the area after a young man was attacked and robbed of his mobile phone and an unspecified amount of money.
Properties were destroyed, prompting a heavy security presence to maintain calm. The police further confirmed that four people were injured and are in “stable condition” at the hospital.
The police divisional commander for Kwabre East Chief Superintendent Kwasi Kwakye who updated the media after a security council meeting said the suspects are assisting in investigations.
“We have arrested three in police custody, the victims at the hospital have also been attended to and they are responding to treatment,” the police chief said after an emergency municipal security council meeting on Wednesday (29 December).
Advice to the media
Kwakye also advised the media to be cautious in their reportage with respect to criminal matters.
“I also have an advice for the media. There are a lot of things you exaggerate, you report so many things on air which is never true,” he stated.
On his part, the MCE of the area Opoku Agyeman Bonsu said: “We’ve met both sides of the conflict and the situation is under control. The police in Mamponteng have since inensified patrols in the area to maintain order.”
Police assurance
The police in a statement dated 29 December 2021, said: “The command is in contact with the chief of Mamponteng, opinion leaders as well as assembly members for the Abenanse and Mamponteng Bronum
electoral areas to assist the police to help keep the peace and security as investigations are ongoing.
“The Ashanti regional police command urges the good people of Mamponteng to remain calm as we celebrate Christmas and to enjoy the peace during this festive season.”
