An assemblyman aspirant for the Tolanu electoral area at Axim in the Nzema East District of the Western region, Anthony Abrokwa has threatened to curse students of Axim Girls’ SHS, who are not indigenes of Axim, but want to vote in the district level elections.
Daniel Afful Ackah, who is contesting with Abrokwa in the Tolanu electoral area, intimated to DailyMailGH.com that, when the voters’ registration exercise was ongoing, he sought permission from the authorities of Axim Girls’ SHS to convey their students, who had turned 18, to the registration centre to register in order that they could vote for him in the district level elections.
However, Mr. Ackah said at the registration centre, Abrokwa, confronted him and warned that some of the students whom Mr. Ackah wanted to register for the voters ID card, are not indigenes of Axim, so even if they get registered, the laws will prevent them from voting on the day of the elections.
“I told him bluntly what he’s saying will not work. It’s just a figment of his imagination, so he should just forget it”, Mr. Ackah added.
According Mr. Ackah, at about 8:15am on Friday, he had a call that Abrokwa and some men numbering about 10, purported to be members of the NDC were on the campus of Axim Girls’ SHS to canvass for votes.
Shortly after, when Mr. Ackah went to the campus to also canvass for votes, the students told him that Abrokwa and his men had threatened to curse students who do not hail from Axim but want to vote in the elections on Tuesday. He said his check from some teachers of the school confirmed the claims of the students.
“The students are really traumatized. But I’ve psyched them not to allow the unfortunate incident stop them from exercising their franchise. I told them it’s their civic responsibility to vote”, Mr. Ackah said.
Account of students whom DailyMailGH.com contacted resonated with the claims of Mr. Ackah. But Mr. Abrokwa alleged that it is rather the MCE of Axim, Frank Okpenyen, who is colluding with the camp of Mr. Ackah to rig the elections.
He said Eric Gym, a teacher of the Axim Girls’ SHS and researcher for the New Patriot Party (NPP) in Axim revealed that they have a 150 support base of girls at Axim Girls’ SHS to make Mr. Abrokwa win the elections.
