At least 10 school pupils drowned and about 20 others were rescued after the boat they were in capsized on the River Oti, in Ghana’s Northern Region.
The victims were said to be returning from the farm when the vessel capsized Friday, according to local media.
It is also reported that the students numbering 31 are students of the St. Charles Liwanga Junior High School in the Saboba District were returning from the headteacher’s farm when the disaster happened.
Three of them are still missing. A search party is on a rescue mission, reported Joy FM.
A police commander, ASP Shine Zokoiku who confirmed the death of the seven deceased.
Unconfirmed reports, Zokoiku said, suggested that the boat was overloaded but was quick to add that the report was yet to be established by the police.
The dead bodies had been moved to the Yendi hospital for preservation.
The whereabouts of the headteacher is unknown as efforts to reach him have failed, according to his relatives.
Drowning incidents are common in Ghana especially down south where illegal mining is rife.Many at times, these rivers overflow their banks after heavy rains.
In October, at least four people died when their boat capsized in the River Offin in the Ashanti Region.Their bodies were pulled out of the river after nearly three days of search.
