The Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals in Ofaakor near Kasoa in the Central Region for alleged possession of a firearm without lawful authority.

The suspects are, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, Mustapha Mohammed, and Abdul Aziz Musah. Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunnor is the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

A statement from the police detailed the arrests, noting that the suspects were apprehended while onboard a Honda CRV with the registration number GX-2044-19.

The arrest took place near the Electoral Commission (EC) Office at Ofaakor, where a pump-action gun and four rounds of ammunition were retrieved from the vehicle. The suspects are currently assisting with police investigations.

It is not clear whether this latest arrest is connected to a disturbance, which occurred early on Sunday (2 June). The violence at the Ofaakor EC Office led to the injury of two individuals, including Ato Koomson, the son of MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, who was stabbed and subsequently transferred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

The Ghana Police Service had announced the arrest of two people concerning the disturbance, which erupted over queuing arrangements for vote transfers and ID card replacements at the EC office.

The police have restored calm at the centre and continue investigating the situation.
