Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has stated that the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) exoneration of former President John Dramani Mahama provides a significant boost for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the December elections.
The OSP had previously identified Mr. Mahama as Government Official 1 (GO1) in the Airbus Scandal but cleared him of any wrongdoing. On August 8, 2024, during a press conference in Accra, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng also confirmed that Samuel Mahama, the former president’s brother, was designated as Intermediary 5. The OSP’s investigation concluded that while Mr. Mahama was identified as GO1 and Individual 1 by UK and US courts, he did not play any role in the scandal.
Ayariga expressed the NDC’s satisfaction with the OSP’s findings during an interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV. He explained that the exoneration not only vindicates Mahama but also strengthens the NDC’s campaign.
“It is good that the OSP has completed the investigation and reached a conclusion. Naturally, we in the NDC are pleased because Mahama is our party’s flagbearer. As we approach this crucial election, where corruption is a central issue, the findings are significant,” Ayariga said.
He added that the NDC has consistently criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, including Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, for alleged corruption scandals. The Airbus scandal, often cited by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as an example of NDC corruption, had been a point of contention.
“To have the OSP come out at this pivotal moment in the campaign and publicly affirm that John Dramani Mahama was not involved in any corruption acts excites us,” Ayariga noted. “We are happy and satisfied, and this development gives us an edge in our campaign, allowing us to highlight our commitment to running a cleaner government and doing a better job at fighting corruption if elected.”
