Ghana’s journey to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast is set to unfold with an impressive 27-man squad meticulously finalized by coach Chris Hughton. The roster boasts a blend of seasoned players and rising stars, all geared towards making a significant impact in the highly anticipated tournament.
One of the standout inclusions is the in-form forward from West Ham, Mohammed Kudus, whose goal-scoring prowess has been nothing short of sensational, amassing an impressive tally of 10 goals across all competitions. Joining him is Athletic Bilbao’s striker, Inaki Williams, bringing his prolific record of eight goals to add firepower to the squad.
Maintaining the leadership core, captain Andre Ayew and his deputy Thomas Partey have rightfully secured their spots in the squad. The return of Partey, recovering from a recent hamstring issue, serves as a significant boost to the team’s midfield prowess. Monaco defender Mohammed Salisu, overcoming early-season injury struggles, has also earned his place, fortifying the defensive lineup.
In a press conference held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, Chris Hughton emphasized the importance of making bold decisions in the squad selection process. Notable exclusions include Baba Rahman and Fatawu Issahaku, both opting out, as well as the sidelined duo Kamaldeen Sulemana and Tariq Lamptey.
A noteworthy addition is Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey, who receives well-deserved recognition for his stellar performances in the Ghana Premier League. Lamptey joins the ranks of three home-based players in the squad, alongside Medeama duo Fatawu Hamidu and striker Jonathan Sowah.
The final squad is poised to commence its camp in Kumasi from January 2, intensifying preparations for the upcoming tournament in Ivory Coast. The Black Stars, holding a remarkable record as four-time African champions, face a challenging Group B, pitted against formidable opponents such as Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.
The AFCON 2023 journey kicks off with a formidable match against Cape Verde on January 14, followed by crucial encounters against powerhouses Egypt and resilient Mozambique. As the anticipation builds, the Ghanaian squad is set to showcase its prowess on the continental stage, aiming for glory in one of Africa’s most prestigious football tournaments.
